Gang member arrested in La Crosse reaches plea in federal drug case

A high-ranking member of a Chicago street gang arrested in April in La Crosse will plead guilty in a federal case in May, according to court records. Walter Blackman, 50, of Indiana is charged with federal drug crimes. His plea hearing is set for 11 a.m. May 15 before an Illinois federal judge. FBI agents and local police on April 4 raided a house at 4330 Verchota St. and arrested Blackman, otherwise known as “Gangster,” for drug trafficking. They didn't say why he was in La Crosse. In a wide-ranging sweep, agents used wiretaps, surveillance and informants to bring down Blackman and 17 members and associates of the Black Disciples, a street gang known for trafficking cocaine and heroin in and around Chicago, according to the FBI. Authorities have seized 1.3 kilograms of crack cocaine, 0.44 kilograms of heroin and 39 guns during the investigation. A 55-page criminal complaint describes Blackman as a “high-ranking” member of the Black Disciples who in 2012 and this year ...

7 alleged California gang members indicted for crime spree, bragging on Facebook

OAKLAND, CALIF –   A federal grand jury has indicted members of a San Francisco Bay Area street gang on charges that they participated in a string of armed robberies and then bragged about the crimes on social media. The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California said in a statement on Thursday that the grand jury had returned a 21-count superseding indictment against seven members of the Landry Crew, an Oakland, California, gang that is affiliated with the larger Money Team gang. Starting in 2012, the gang members began to commit a number of crimes, including armed robberies of Rite Aids, Safeway and Walmart stores as well as home-invasion-style robberies, authorities said. The indictment says the Landry Crew boasted about their crimes on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites. Some of the gang members took photos of themselves after their crimes rolling around in cash and stolen items. Named in the indictment were Melvin Landry Jr., 2...

Rapper PSY wants Tom Cruise to go 'Gangnam Style'

BANGKOK (AP) - The South Korean rapper behind YouTube's most-viewed video ever has set what might be a "Mission: Impossible" for himself. Asked which celebrity he would like to see go "Gangnam Style," the singer PSY told The Associated Press: "Tom Cruise!" Surrounded by screaming fans, he then chuckled at the idea of the American movie star doing his now famous horse-riding dance. PSY's comments Wednesday in Bangkok were his first public remarks since his viral smash video - with 842 million views and counting - surpassed Justin Bieber's "Baby," which until Saturday held the record with 803 million views. "It's amazing," PSY told a news conference, saying he never set out to become an international star. "I made this video just for Korea, actually. And when I released this song - wow." The video has spawned hundreds of parodies and tribute videos and earned him a spotlight alongside a variety of su...

Inmates allege serious abuse by L.A. County prison guards

Image
By Robert Faturechi Dozens of inmates at Los Angeles County’s Men’s Central Jail have alleged serious physical abuse by deputies — broken ribs, black eyes and head wounds that needed to be stapled shut, according to a report released by the American Civil Liberties Union on Wednesday. The extent of abuse at the downtown L.A. facility is impossible to gauge, the report said, because the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department refuses to share information on the number of use-of-force incidents investigated and its findings. Sheriff’s Department officials said all complaints are investigated thoroughly by the Office of Independent Review, which oversees the department. “Whether these investigations are shared isn’t relevant,” said sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore. “What is relevant is the complaint itself is thoroughly investigated.” The ACLU report, spanning a 12-month period from 2008 to 2009, was based on weekly visits to the facility and inmate complaints. Many were anonymous,...
